Faculty Scholars Research Grant Application

Purpose

The purpose of this grant is to encourage and engender collaborative research in an area of international business between B&E faculty a faculty member(s) from a University located in another country. Funding from this grant is targeted toward early stage research (e.g., theory, hypothesis development, data collection) that is targeted toward a high quality (“A” or “A+”) journal. Up to $2500 can be awarded to this end.

Therefore, applicants must demonstrate that

  • This international-oriented research is collaborative work with a faculty member from another non- U.S. University. Preference will be given to collaboration with a researcher working for a University in a G-20 country.
  • This research is in its early stage of development.

Funding will be available for twelve months after grants are awarded. Any funds not used will revert to the Robbins Center. An annual report of the use of funds is required up until subsequent research is published. No future research monies will be awarded if this report is not filed.

Instructions

Using the SECTION HEADINGS below to prepare your typed proposal according to the specific instructions included for each section. All instructions must be followed to be considered for funding.

Write your proposal with such clarity that it may be understood by ANY member of the committee. Keep in mind that the committee is interdisciplinary and reaches decisions by consensus.

Each page of the application must be consecutively numbered. Proposals must use a typeface no smaller than 10 points and have at least 1/2” margin on all sides of the page. The Proposal Body (Sections I-V) is limited to five pages single-spaced plus references and attachments. The Budget and Biographical Sketch are limited to two pages each.

Therefore your application will be comprised of seven sections, 9 page (single-spaced) maximum:

  • Section I to V: Proposal Body (limited to a total of 5 single-spaced pages)
  • Section V: Budget (2 page maximum; one page with table (see BUDGET) and one page for budget justification)
  • Section VI: Section VII: Biographical Sketch (2 pages)

Funding Amount

The funding cap is $2,500 for new projects where international travel is necessary.

Applciation Outline

SECTION I – SIGNIFICANCE OF INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH PROJECT
Clearly state the need for your project. Describe the contribution of your project towards increasing knowledge in the international business field of study.

SECTION II – BACKGROUND
Briefly summarize the current and significant work in the field of study of this proposal. Please be selective rather than exhaustive.

SECTION III – OBJECTIVES
Precisely list the objectives of the project considering time, funds, and available project personnel.

SECTION IV – PROJECT PLAN
Describe the methods of analysis, and/or other investigative approaches of the project. State what is to be done, when it is to be done, where it will be done, and who will do it. Provide evidence to demonstrate your ability to carry out such a project plan.

SECTION V – EXPECTED OUTCOMES
If successfully completed, indicate the anticipated contributions this project will make to the extant literature. Please quantify the anticipated outcomes in terms of publication outlet. Comment on the quality of this outlet.

SECTION VI - BUDGET
The budget should provide an important indication of the soundness and thoroughness of your proposal. Itemize the budget by the indicated categories. Do not include requests for ordinary equipment, supplies, or printing routinely provided by your department.

BUDGET JUSTIFICATION (Required; up to one page).
Indicate clearly how each item in the budget will support your project. Identify the types of equipment, supplies, and printing needed. Give basis for any travel expenses including destination, duration, mode, and cost of transportation, meals, and lodging in accordance with state travel regulations. If you are requesting summer salary, specify the period during which you should receive such funds.

SECTION VII – BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH (VITA)
This should simply be a brief, selective vita (no more than two pages including references) listing employment record, faculty rank, professional accomplishments, publications, etc.

Also note at the bottom of the vita:

  • Previous research funding, last five years (if any)
  • Number of previous research grants (from any source) received in past five years. (Please do not include any Faculty Travel or Development grants you have received)
